Principal clocks up 25 years’ service Continued from page 1 Witherlea School’s Friday afternoon assembly took a turn for the unexpected for Murray when far more people turned up and the children started a different programme than he expected. Each class made a presentation on what they liked about him, especially that he made a point of meeting each pupil and learning their names, finishing by telling him that they ‘hope you’re as proud to be our principal as we are to have you
as a principal’. The school gave him a piece of art, a tree with every student’s thumb print as leaves. Murray told his students they were all ‘great secret holders’. He says it didn’t seem ‘anything like 25 years’. He had been principal of Ward School when he applied for the Witherlea School principal’s job. After the interview process, he had been waiting for the call. “When I got the call, it was a cold
wintery day, my boys were only little and we were making forts and tunnels in the spare bedroom. I had to crawl out to answer the phone. “It was very cool, as my children came along and were students at Witherlea School as well.” Murray says he has a very good reason for being principal at Witherlea School for 25 years – ‘this is the best school I could possibly be at’. “What makes it the best school? “First of all, it’s you and the 25 years of students at Witherlea
School – we’ve just had awesome kids, awesome staff, a wonderful board of trustees, and wonderful parents, grandparents, and the other people who support you. “I have a big thank you to our community.” He rules out having another 25 years at the school, but his time will always be a treasured memory, he says. “At the end of my teaching career, I’m always going to remember what a fantastic time this was.”
Water costs big question for ratepayers Story and photo by Cathie Bell Moving to district-wide funding for drinking water could benefit Blenheim ratepayers in the long-term, even if they have to pay more in the shortterm, a Blenheim ward councillor says. Councillor Jamie Arbuckle, who is leading the councillors’ consultation efforts on the Annual Plan, says it is really important for people to have their say about how drinking water should be funded. Traditionally, council has funded drinking water on a ‘user-pays’ basis, which means the cost is unaffordable for small townships. Last year, the district’s ratepayers agreed to help pay Seddon’s drinking water upgrade, and now the council is asking if that should be extended further. Option 1 would see Blenheim ratepayers pay $107 a year more as operating costs are spread across the district; option 2 would see Blenheim ratepayers pay $196 a year more as everyone in the district pays the same amount for drinking water supply; and option 3 – the preferred option – would see Blenheim ratepayers pay $128
more a year to spread the costs more evenly across the district, using the same basis as for sewerage. Jamie says that from talking to people at the moment, most Blenheim ratepayers seem to be willing to subsidise, but how much it will cost them is the big question. “From a Blenheim ratepayer point of view, joining a district-wide group for drinking water could have future benefit. Blenheim doesn’t get subsidised from the reserves, for example, the way others do, so there is future benefit going forward as well.” Jamie says the options are set out in the council’s Consultation Document, which is ’pretty straightforward’. The council’s Consultation Document on its Annual Plan 2015-16 says the forecast rates increase has dropped to 2.2 per cent, from 4.97 per cent, after a slowdown in some large infrastructure projects and a budget review. The biggest issue is about funding quality drinking water to Marlborough’s smaller communities, it says. Hard copies of the Consultation Document are available at the coun-

cil building, and at the libraries in Blenheim and Picton. Councillors are going to be at the markets at the end of the month, and at libraries, Jamie says. “In that atmosphere, it’s quite relaxed and people are more willing to talk. I find libraries and markets a better place to socialise and talk.”

Fire destroys house in Tuamarina A family lost their Tuamarina house and all their possessions in a fire on Sunday afternoon. Most of the house collapsed in the fire, leaving only a brick fireplace and a window frame in the rubble. Police say there is no reason to suspect the fire was lit deliberately. A cause has not yet been identified, but an investigation is under way
Chinese visit for sister city links Five people from the Ningxia Autonomous Region of China are visiting Marlborough today as part of a possible sister-city relationship between Ningxia and Marlborough. Third national title for plougher By Celeste Alexander Ian Woolley’s preparations for the New Zealand Ploughing Championships held at the weekend have paid off and seen him take out a national title. The NZ championship was held last Saturday and Sunday near Feilding where Ian and fellow ploughman Ash Murdoch competed, Ian in the conventional class and Ash in vintage. Ian received the Case IH Silver Plough award for first place and Ash received a trophy for Best Presented Rig. This is the third year in a row that Ian has won the national title, a first

for NZ ploughing. It also means that Ian will be competing at the World Ploughing championships in December 2017 which at this stage has been set for Kenya. Ian has already competed at the Worlds in Denmark last year and this year he will be heading to England in September. He says as excited as he is about the win, his focus will be on preparing for England. “It’s always exciting and exhilarating to win but for now I’m still getting my head around competing at this year’s world champs,” he laughs.
Marlborough cultural treasures
Potter Fran Maguire and carver Clem Mellish have been named this year’s Marlborough living cultural treasures. The annual award is run by Marlborough Museum.
“I will starting thinking about Kenya early next year. But overall the nationals was a great event at the weekend, we had good weather and conditions and everyone there were a great bunch of people,” Ian says. The Marlborough Ploughing Association is in full swing with fundraising to help cover the costs of Ian competing in England. A quiz night and auction has been organised for Friday, May 13 at the Woodbourne Tavern. The tavern has kindly donated the venue and nibbles for the evening and is also helping to run the event. All proceeds raised on the night will go to assisting Ian’s travel and

“The Millennium Gallery does a great job, but it’s a public art gallery. The Art Society is a bit out of town.” They tried to lease out the old bookshop space, but that was unsuccessful and they didn’t want to leave it empty any longer, Charlene says. “Why an art gallery? Why not?” Art is a natural fit for the couple, she says. “It’s not hugely different from books, both creative processes. It’s the conversations you have with people about them.” Peter says art can be like tasting wine, watching a film, or reading a book. “It’s a sensory experience.” Charlene says it’s great having a new project, and it is coming together really well. “The feedback is just so incredibly positive. “It’s always a risk trying a new venture, it doesn’t matter how much research you do, but people are really keen.”

Story and photo by Cathie Bell One of the vacant sites on Market Street is to take on new life as owners Peter and Charlene Scott open the Detour art gallery today. Charlene says the couple are enjoying their new project and are thrilled with how well their Market Street site is coming together as an art gallery. Already, people have been popping in to look around, and the artists bringing work in have also liked the way the space works, she says. The couple are well-known in the region’s cultural scene and for several years ran an independent bookshop in the Market Street space. They say that when they still had the bookshop, they dabbled in having the art in the space. “One of our favourite stores when we first moved to Marlborough was the little fish gallery in Wynen Street. When it moved, there has been a gap in the cultural space since then.

Kohanga Reo teachers graduate Five Maori immersion teachers graduated their training last week. Nikora got her Whakapakiri, which means she has completed all the training to be a
kaiako, a head teacher. This is thought to be the first time anyone in Marlborough has completed this. Marlborough has only one kohanga reo, Te Kohanga Reo o Nga Puawai in Budge Street, operating at the moment. There have been others in Blenheim and Picton but they have closed.

Tears and hugs during emotional farewell Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Last Friday an emotional poroporaki (farewell) was given to Renwick Kindergarten head teacher Gwenda Jones. Gwenda has accepted a position as senior teacher with the Marlborough Kindergarten Association, so an official ‘handover’ was held with staff, children and parents. A number of Gwenda’s family were also present for the occasion. There were tears, hugs and gifts exchanged between Gwenda and staff who acknowledged her 25 years involvement with the Renwick Kindergarten. “It’s an emotional day for us teachers. We have appreciated your time and effort and are
very proud of the journey we have been on with you, and we will continue following the guiding principles you have installed,” staff said in their speech. A number of the kindergarten’s children also stood and shared their own messages, thanking Gwenda for being their teacher. On behalf of the Marlborough Kindergarten Association, office manager Corina Naus spoke and expressed how thrilled they were to welcome Gwenda to the team. “We know how hard it is for her to leave you all but we will treasure Gwenda. She will still be making a huge impact on Marlborough kindergartens.”

bypass the Grove Road/Main Street route. By-passes are sensible. Look at the towns with by-passes and north of Wellington, major spending is going on a route to bypass a number of towns. Even though it is the NZTA’s job to build bridges and highways etc, surely the council could put a case to them re a bypass, as if the council don’t suggest it, how will they know it’s required. “Motorist”
Wake up, council! Dear Ed, What a waste of money and a monument to council’s archaic attitude would be a new Grove Road bridge! Other day, I followed three big truck-trailer units down Grove Road, slowly over the bridge and through three roundabouts and down Main Street, before I turned off to work. The three trucks lumbered on down Main Street, probably thankful they had left the roundabouts and delays behind. No doubt frustrated they had wasted 20 - 30 minutes negotiating the route through Blenheim. The point is a new bridge would not ease the traffic crawl through town.
A bypass would because south bound traffic are taken out of town. South bound traffic would be happy too having saved 20-30 minutes. Fluoride choice Dear Ed, Can we have the other side of the story please? I am disturbed that the Sun article lends support to the government intervening in dental health (as if it is any expert), and thus floating a balloon for acceptance of the theory that it’s OK to force every single person in the country to ingest fluoride along with their water consumption. What about: 1. the violation of the right to “Consent” in one’s own medical practices 2. the overwhelming evidence worldwide over decades of investigation by experts including in health, dentistry, fluoridation, that show sodium fluoride is a POISON 3. government taking on the decision under the guise of “health boards” appearing to endorse the practice of fluoridation for everyone 4. the number of countries (especially in Europe) that do NOT fluoridate their water distribution and whose populations still have good teeth 5. the evidence supporting the fact of fluoridation having harmful consequences throughout the body (we are not JUST TEETH), such as pain, inflammation, digestion and others, especially pertaining to the developmental issues around fetus growth 6. fluoride is ingested along with many other daily product consumption - when is too much? With all of these issues not addressed in the article by Cathie Bell in your Wed 13 April 2016 paper, I think we deserve to have the full case presented and be able to make an INFORMED choice for our own health, without being subject to bureaucratic experiments ignoring evidence which points to the very strong case against fluoridation. Behind the front line Blenheim man Albert Collett, better known as Bert, served during the Second World War as an engineer and supplies transporter from behind the front lines. He shares his most memorable stories with reporter Celeste Alexander. Born and raised in Marlborough by parents Albert and Alice Collett, Bert was one of three children who grew up on the family farm on Swamp Road. His childhood was a happy one, spent pig hunting, whitebaiting and selling birds’ eggs where he could to earn ‘a few bob here and there’. It was during one of his many excursions with friends that he met his wife Lily Hamilton at the local river, a ‘lovely’ young woman from Kaikoura. The pair married and had their first child Jennifer and lived and worked in Kaikoura. At the age of 20 Bert enlisted for military service in the New Zealand Army during the Second World War. At the time he didn’t think he would be away long and when he left he remembers telling Lily, “Won’t be long dear”. It was five years later that he returned home. In 1941 Bert boarded the ‘Empress of Japan’ along with 3000 other troops, including fellow Marlborough man the late Ivan Gibbons, and made the six week journey that would take him to Egypt and Northern Italy where he underwent training. He says the threat of an enemy submarine attack was on his mind throughout the journey so it was a relief when they arrived. In Italy the troops were lined
up and handpicked for different roles and with Bert’s background in working with tractors and machinery he was sent with the engineers.
“Everyone had a job to do. The troops needed fuel, ammo, supplies and runways to land. We often brought prisoners back as well.” The captain of Bert’s battalion was former Prime Minister Robert Muldoon, a man Bert described as being a ‘bloody good guy’. “He didn’t muck around and was straight to the point but a great guy. “I can remember one day a German rode into our camp on his motorcycle. He realised where he was and took off roaring. “Robbie picked up an anti tank gun and blew him off his seat. The guy was dead when he hit the ground,” he says. Bert’s battalion was responsible for building bridges, transporting supplies and repairing holes on the runway. He says while he didn’t see a lot of the front line action there were still close calls with the Germans.
The memory of one particular event has remained with him throughout the years. “It was around 1942 and a group of about 20 of us were in a truck, including a man called Chum Taylor who was also from Blenheim. “While we were driving two Germans ran out at our truck and tossed a hand grenade in the back. There wasn’t any time to grab it and throw it out so without hesitation Chum threw himself over the grenade. His actions saved the lives of 20 men that day,” Bert says. After returning home from the war one of the first things Bert did was visit Chum’s family dressed in full uniform. “It was a promise I made myself to visit Chum’s family and talk to them about their son.” After five years of service mostly in Italy and some time spent in Germany, Bert was sent home. He and Lily went on to have two more children and lived and worked in Marlborough. Bert went into transport and later worked with Lily with the Keystore Wholesale Groceries company. The couple built houses in Blenheim and at one stage were even Marlborough’s largest garlic growers. Lily has since passed and Bert is now a resident at Springlands Lifestyle Village. In his 94th year he says he is happy with his life and enjoys watching his family, now in its fifth generation, grow.

JPs’ long service recognised Story and photo by Cathie Bell More than 300 years of service to the community has been recognised with a ceremony at the Marlborough District Council. Ten Justices of the Peace and their friends and families gathered with Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman to receive certificates recognising they had been JPs for more than 30 years. Those recognised were: Malcolm Dick, Alan Furness, Robert Goulter, David Hall, Barry Holdaway, Gavin Kerr, Jim Mears,
Linette Randle, Pamela Saunders, and Rosemary Wells. Linette and Pamela were unable to attend the ceremony. Marlborough is wellserved for JPs, Alistair says, and he noted former MP Sir Douglas Kidd had clearly been active in recruiting JPs as most at the ceremony had been tapped for the role by Sir Douglas. While the roles are voluntary, they carry great responsibility, he says. JPs witness statutory declarations, sign official papers, and some sit in court
on traffic and other minor offences. Several of the JPs spoke at the function of how rewarding they found their work, especially when they were able to help people in need. State of our environment a benchmark for region By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s latest State of the Environment report provides a benchmark of information that changes and environmental effects of development can be measured against. Last week, the Marlborough District Council published the report, called “Our land, our water, our place”. Rangitane iwi spokesman Richard Bradley who began the official ceremony in the council chambers on Friday morning says the land is the health of the people. “It is our land, our place, our responsibility to make sure we

pastoral and marine farmers, environmental groups, and Green MP Steffan Browning, Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says “It’s our first ‘report card on the region’, following up the last 2008 report. “With all the updated information we are now building up a picture of the environmental change that has occurred since our first report 20 years ago,” says Council Environmental Science and Monitoring Manager Alan Johnson. “The contents will help to inform the community discussion of the often-controversial environmental
issues and it will be a fantastic resource for teachers,” he said. Council’s Environment Committee chairman Peter Jerram says environmental sustainability is the key to a successful and prosperous economy. “What this report tells us is that our population and economy are growing, and that growth provides challenges to all of our natural resources.” The report includes many success stories, showcasing the good work done by organisations and individuals in Marlborough, he says, but it also underlines the challenges the region faces with
soil conservation, climate extremes, water quality, natural hazards, biodiversity loss, invasive species, overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution of coastal waters. “It should help people understand the outcome of the review of our resource management plans which will come out as the updated Marlborough Plan in a couple of months’ time. “I hope people look at this revised Plan in the context of what is set out here because it explains the environmental changes that we are trying to address in the Plan changes.”

Bikes set to roar into action By Celeste Alexander This Anzac Day, Monday April 25, there will be a special ‘Rescue Ride’ event held in Blenheim to support a charitable and lifesaving emergency air service. The Ulysses Club Marlborough Branch will be embarking on their Rescue Ride to raise funds for the Life Flight Trust which provides a life-line connecting the people of Marlborough to life-saving specialist medical care only available in the major centres. This includes the local Westpac Rescue Helicopter service and an air ambulance service which transfers critically ill patients, including children and premature babies, to specialist care they urgently require. Ulysses club members are inviting anyone with a roadworthy motorcycle to join them as they ride from Havelock to Blenheim, arriving at their destination at the Seymour Street carpark (behind Harvey Norman). There they will collect a gold coin donation from members of the public who attend. A sausage sizzle and Life Flight merchan-

Tom’s lifesaving flight ‘still memorable’ By Celeste Alexander Since 1982 Life Flight has flown more than 6000 people in the top of the South Island. Of that number Life Flight responds to an average of four urgent missions every week. Each flight requires around $2500 in fundraising to make these missions possible, so the support from Marlburians is gratefully received by the Trust. One person who has been on the receiving end of this life saving service and understands its importance is Blenheim man Tom Percy. In June 2011 Tom suffered a heart attack and after several hours at Wairau Hospital it was decided to transfer him to Nelson for further treatment. He was flown via fixed-wing Life Flight and after several days at Nelson Hospital it was determined that Tom required heart by-pass surgery. He was again bundled up and flown to Wellington where the surgery was successfully performed. “Overall it was quite a daunting experience but I was very impressed by the fact that once my condition had been determined, they were not going to let me out of their care until it was resolved. “This is where Life Flight literally came to the rescue and the care I received in the

two Life Flights was exemplary. Both times I was accompanied by a fully trained and equipped transit nurse and I remember the pilots regularly checking to make sure everything was okay. “Not the best of circumstances for a flight ‘over the hill’ and then across the Strait but the fact that I’m here to talk about it makes them two of the best flights I’ve taken. “Many heartfelt thanks to Life Flight,” Tom says. You can support the Life Flight Trust by going along to the Rescue Ride this coming Monday.

The sun came out to celebrate with the Waikawa Waka Ama group as its new boat was launched and blessed in Picton last Saturday. Waikawa Waka Ama spokeswoman Rebecca Hill says it was a beautiful day, and ‘just awesome’ to celebrate the launch of the new waka with about 50 people who joined in. The group have been using a borrowed waka from Christchurch for the past three years, but a $16,500 grant from the Rata Foundation enabled the group to buy their own. The Waikawa Waka Ama Whanau has between 15 and 20 active members. Rebecca says the waka came from Ruakaka, north of Auckland. “They’re a specialty product. I’d have bought local, but there aren’t any waka builders in Marlborough.”
Dragonboat fundraiser Marlborough’s Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team - Simply the Breast are fundraising. The club, along with other breast cancer dragon boat teams around New Zealand, are running the Wellington-produced and cast movie ‘The Great Maidens Blush’. The screening is on Wednesday May 11 at 6:30pm at the Top Town Cinemas in Blenheim.

Dirt track racing reunion this Friday By Celeste Alexander This Friday will be a drive down memory lane for locals involved in dirt track racing in Marlborough since its inception. T he Easter n St ates Speedway club is hosting a reunion event this Friday at its clubrooms on Vintage Lane in Renwick, and is free to attend. The clubrooms will open at 4pm with displays of historical facts and photographs from as early as 1967 to present day racing. A number of race vehicles, both vintage and modern will also be on display. Tea, coffee and bar facilities will be open through-
out the night and the club welcomes everyone wanting to go along for a quick look or spend the evening reminiscing. For those interested in attending, the club would love to hear from you. This can be anyone who raced, volunteered, were track officials or even family members of those who were involved. A courtesy van will be available later in the night from the clubrooms. Birds land impressive times Near perfect conditions on Saturday for Blenheim Racing Pigeon clubs birds made for a welcome change from that of previous weekends. With the flock released at 9.55 am at Hawarden, a distance of 190 km, the pigeons cleared the race point quickly and headed for home. The winning birds made a time of 71 km/hr to the loft of Alister Cooper at Renwick, followed closely by the Two Fisher’s birds that made 70 km/hr to Dillon’s Point. Another good result for third place was Chris Bensley who was very close on 69.7 km/hr, young Sindy Kirkwood of Spring Creek was fourth, her bird doing 69.1 km/hr. Neil and Rob of Nearo loft in the Awatere Valley were next in line with 67 km/hr and 59 km/ hr respectively and then Carl Kirkwood with 47 km/hr.
